We Failed Jayden Williams Long Before Stockbridge Did

Georgia had a 23-year-old, educated, Black mayor, and most of us found out about him the week he was removed from office. Sit with that for a second, because I did, live on air, and it made me mad.
What happened
Jayden Williams took office in Stockbridge in January 2026 as the youngest mayor the city ever elected. On Sept. 12, after a daylong hearing, the city council voted 3-0 to remove him.
City investigators looked at three allegations: personal charges on his city purchasing card, a relationship with an 18-year-old high school student that began with messages about a city internship, and mistreatment of city staff. Williams says he repaid the card charges, that he and the student were "both adults," and that a police report found nothing criminal. No charges have been filed, and he can appeal to Henry County Superior Court.
My take: this is on us, too
I'm not here to tell you he did everything right. I'm here to ask why the first time most of us heard his name was when it was being dragged.
"They only talk about these people when something bad comes out about them, because it's more clickable."
That's the part that gets me. We'll give a rapper fighting on Instagram all the exposure in the world. But a young, educated Black man wins a mayor's race in metro Atlanta, and the culture barely blinks.
"We failed this man. We failed this young man."
When somebody like Jayden makes history, he needs a whole community lined up around him: mentors, advisors, people who know how city hall works and who's watching. That's how you protect a first. That's how you keep a first from becoming a last.
"If we were celebrating him enough, we would all know about him, and we could have got people in there to protect him."
The lesson for us
Celebrate our history makers while they're making history, not after. Learn their names, share their wins, and show up for them before the headlines turn. That goes double for young Black and queer leaders, who walk into those rooms with more people waiting for them to slip.
I'll be watching what happens next with Jayden's appeal. Tell me what you think.
