In 2012, before the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Channel Orange, Frank Ocean shared an open letter revealing that his first love had been a man. The moment was historic, making him one of the first major Black male artists in contemporary R&B and hip hop to openly discuss same-sex love at the height of his career.
Rather than slowing his momentum, Frank Ocean's authenticity propelled him forward. Albums like Channel Orange and Blonde redefined contemporary R&B, earning critical acclaim and influencing an entire generation of artists.
